Testimonials & Directing Reviews
I was so lucky to have Constance’s guidance through an audition monologue. It had been so long since I’ve played with a new monologue so I was especially nervous. Constance made me feel so comfortable and was so helpful in creating a space to play and bring forward what was going to be my best for my audition!! She’s so passionate about acting and so fantastically talented it was a joy to work through my piece with her!! I truly owe what I think to be my best audition yet to Constance’s guidance and her passion for acting!
– Molly Scott, Actress
Constance is one of those rare directors that, thanks to her absolutely potent interpersonal skills, her own innate brilliance as an actor, and clear-sightedness to the heart of a good story, instills the utmost confidence in her actors. Confidence not only in her directing talent, but self-confidence for the actors as well. I know this because I had the very good fortune of being one of those actors some years back (though I've acted alongside her more recently, which is a different and equally magical experience, anyone who has seen her work will attest). Working in a room with Constance, I feel so seen and heard. She is collaborative and intensely supportive of her actors- she nurtures an actor's drive to discover new things, while imparting direction that elevates the story. She is completely present in the creative process- she is also clear when sharing direction or ideas. I have worked with directors who spoke ambiguously, who didn't have genuine interest in their actors' ideas- I remember leaving rehearsals with them with my shoulders slumped. But with Constance, an actor will feel empowered to do their best work. I was so, so excited to hear the amazing audience reaction to the fruits of our labor, and I distinctly hope to be directed by her again. The world needs more directors like her- brilliant, intuitive, savvy, empathetic, and inspiring.
– Ashley Risteen, Actress
As a director, Miss Witman brings decades of experience to help create compelling and immersive experiences for the audience. Her direction is insightful and nuanced, truly capturing the heart of the play. She also has a knack for casting the perfect actors for the role and ability to communicate clearly and effectively to the cast and crew. Lastly, she's professional, dependable, punctual and a joy to work with. I would work with her again in a New York minute!
– Don Goettler, DoGo Productions
One of the crucial qualities, maybe THE crucial quality, that I look for in a director is someone who knows what they want. Sounds straightforward but it isn’t always true. A director who knows who the characters are and what they want to see from them, while also allowing for collaboration and discoveries that stem from that original vision is, to me, the ideal directorial approach. When Constance directed me in ‘A Thousand Clowns’ she showed all of those traits and it was an incredibly rewarding experience for me on an artistic and personal level. I would be thrilled to work with her again as a director and would not hesitate to recommend any actor do the same.
– Matthew Scofield, Actor & Writer
Director Constance Witman is a longtime respected actress, with some of her best work portraying dark characters. She brings that skill to bear here, and shows real promise for her newly chosen role.
– Jeanné McCartin, Review for 'Mercy Street'
Director Constance Witman's triumph is the cast and the character design. Each role is distinct, knowable and oh so real. Together with the play's deft movement, wonderful little bits of stage business, her astute direction goes a long way in smoothing out the play's 40-year-old wrinkles.
